In Riyadh, I’ve noticed that many malls favor darker, low-lit spaces, which can create a subdued atmosphere but may also reduce energy levels. In contrast, cities like Dubai and Hong Kong utilize thoughtful, strategic lighting to transform malls into vibrant environments that invite people to stay, explore, and connect.
As architects, we know that lighting impacts more than just the visual appearance of a space—it influences how we feel. During the day, natural light boosts serotonin, lifting our mood and energy. In the evening, lighting transitions to warmer tones, encouraging our bodies to release melatonin, signaling it’s time to unwind. This natural rhythm guides our design decisions, helping us create spaces that not only look beautiful but also feel intuitive and comfortable.

How do we achieve this in mall design? Here are some lighting strategies that balance functionality with human connection:
- Embracing_Daylight: Integrate natural light wherever possible through skylights and glass walls. For instance, the Dubai Mall uses skylights to flood common areas with natural light, creating a warm, open environment that feels expansive and alive.
- Layered_Lighting Design: By combining ambient, task, and accent lighting, we can define different zones for different purposes. Bright general lighting invigorates high-energy areas, while softer accent lighting in cafes and seating areas offers a restful retreat.
- Color_Temperature Zoning: Cool white lighting (5000K-6500K) works well in active retail spaces to energize and maintain alertness. Warmer tones (2700K-3000K) are ideal for lounges and eateries, where a relaxed, inviting feel is key.
Intentional lighting design not only elevates the aesthetics of a mall but also honors the natural rhythms and needs of its visitors. A well-lit mall becomes more than just a shopping destination—it becomes a place that feels intuitive and connected to the people within it.
